Filming on Location for Jane Eyre 2006
Last week the BBC were busy filming scenes at Belton House for their new production of Jane Eyre. While this article has very little in new information- it deals almost exclusively with the impact of filming on the house and what a bother it all is- but there are these fabulous new images from the production including a behind the scenes picture, and a trivia note about the Red Room:
Although Belton House has its own red room, opened in March 2004 after two years of restoration work, the red room where Mrs Reed locks Jane is actually being created at Sudbury Hall while Belton's red room is transformed into the grand salon at Gateshead.
Like Belton House, location for Gateshead but also Rosings Park in Pride and Prejudice, Sudbury Hall was also used for interiors in the same 1995 production of Jane Austen's novel.

Very nice pictures; thanks for keeping us up-to-date!
As I said on Bronteblog, the lips are a little scary, and Ruth is certainly wearing an odd expression, but she looks super otherwise!

I do my best. News has been slow this week but this was a nice surprise on google news this morning. The BBC's last big news on the production was about a week ago so I'm hoping things will begin to pick up speed now.
I've been sorting through the archives again and I found some interesting posts. I've been following it from back when the BBC were denying they had any plans to film it :D
to liz:
Some other people have commented on this as well: that they don't like the makeup work on Ruth Wilson. I think the makeup is a little much perhaps, but her expression doesn't bother me at all. The expression is very like Charlotte's own, and I still say the costume in these early publicity photos also looks like they are alluding to the Richmond portrait of Charlotte (where she is frowning in this way).
Ruth totally looks like an older version of Georgie with that expression!!
And I do like what I've seen of the costuming so far.
"they are alluding to the Richmond portrait of Charlotte (where she is frowning in this way). "
That's so true!! I have a picture of that very portrait in my room I couldn't agree with you more about the choice of costume, hair-style, and shape of the brows!
to mysticgypsy:
Agreed. The casting was well done if we can easily believe this is the same person. The locations look like they are going to be fabulous as well.
Ooh, lovely pictures. Thank you. I'm getting a bit obsessed with this production.
I saw Ruth Wilson in "Suburban Shootout" on C5 in the UK. She's Camilla Diamond's daughter Jewel. She's very pretty and very thin. She was wearing a hot pink bikini, she was hard to ignore. If I had her figure I'd live in a bikini.
Her eyebrows distracted me though. They looked like they wanted to part company with her face, if that makes sense.
Again, nice blog.
the makeup does look strange. and the lips are rather scary. but you're right in the similarity to charlotte! (although the lips seem a little too much.)
You're welcome. I did hear much the same from my Cornish correspondent. About the bikini- not the eyebrows.
I'm not sure I do know what that bit about her eyebrows wanting to part company with her face means but thank you for the comment all the same, it made me smile :)
to le_ssa:
I thought the 'scary' part was the makeup? I wonder what it is- about 4 or 5 people have said these early photos (and the one I posted earlier) were 'scary'- both Ruth and Toby.
I'm interested in seeing more... she seems to attractive in this picture! Or perhaps that's just me. But I really like her looks regardless. The blush/lips are a bit much, but that's likely because it's a picture, and will look different under the camera.
And! I spotted Georgie Henley! Bottom right of the Red Room pic.
both the makeup and lips i think. hehe. like she's in a bad mood. -_-* love the costume though!
she looks quite the minx ;)
Bronteana: Ruth's eyebrows were very arched. Maybe they were shocked by her bikini. Anyway, I think she looks smashing as Jane.
ha! Thanks for clearing that up! ;)
Thanks for the pictures :) I cant wait to see this :) If you find any more pictures of Georgie I would love to see them :D
You're welcome! I will try to remember to let you know when anything else turns up.
Or, heidur, you can just keep coming back here, as I do... There always seems to be something new! :-)
