First of the Preview Clips Available

You can now see some of that 'mysterious' second clip we all saw in the background of the BBC Breakfast interview with Toby Stephens. The music from the beginning seems to be standard for the Drama preview clips of other productions. The clip is of the first interview scene- much altered.

If you have not seen the interview yet, it also includes part of the Hay Lane scene, and is available here.

Hurrah! My computer is finally back up and working and decided to not let me see the clip, ggrh. Eventually (after some kind words and much stroking) I saw it and, the clip is great, but the theme musak, awful, totally awful. Please don't let that be the theme music.

On the plus side, the clip doesn't look murky, as it did in the TS interview.

Awesome! I like how Toby portrays Rochester's broodiness and how he snickers to himself. I like how Ruth portrays Jane's uncertainty in this meeting. Too bad he doesn't say the "you must be tenacious of life..." comment during the Lowood questioning but thats ok. I know that I'll nitpick...

Is it known how long each episode it? It just occurred to me to ask since I didn't realizer the first episode would get as far as Thornfield.

This whets the appetite even more!

That is not the theme music. I heard the same from preview clips of Bleak House.

Yes, I just saw it a second time and it is a good deal lighter.

I have to keep telling myself to forget about the novel's dialogue- but it isn't easy since it is one of the reasons I love the book. And that is a good question about the length. I'm sure I have it noted on one of these posts but I can't seem to remember...

Hmmmm. Must think a long while and re-watch before I can firm my opinion.

But I'm a bit disappointed that Rochester doesn't use quite so many eccentric turns of phrase - he's not so wordy here. ;) He seems a bit more blunt: "Wonder you survived, you're so small."

But Rochester's attitude is good. Especially his posture in the chair. I'm really enjoying the perfomances and acting; Jane especially is wonderful. Adele is Adele - "Ma boite! Merci, merci, merci!" :D Rochester's intolerance of Adele's kiss is great.

Did I miss Mrs. Fairfax, or was she sitting aside?

I really enjoyed it!

Yes, his turns of phrase and the dialogue in the book are wonderful. Here and in the Hay Lane teaser, it seemed abbreviated in language. Rochester does have that gift of gab :-D

I'm really curious about Mrs. Fairfax.

Agreed, but the more I see it the more it grows on me. I think I was alarmed at first because his blunt tone recalled the 1997 ITV version I despise. ;)

Ah well, there's always the BBC's 1973 version for witty goodness!

True. And that's nothing new. I am not familiar with the scriptwriter's work, so I have to have faith for the rest. I have seen some really lovely revisioning in other adaptations and some really gaudy trash in others. I'm rather liking the changes so far, and they seem to be in character.

Yes, they are definitely within character. So far they seem just right. :-)

Waited all day and FINALLY saw the clip. Of course my first reaction was *alarmed!* oh no they changed the dialogue! Bronteana, you mentioned earlier that the blunt dialogue recalled the 1997 version, and I realize that's exactly the fear that this clip gave me. (I just spent a minute wiggling my fingers at the computer screen, imploring "please don't go down THAT road!" as if the action might make this version more faithful to the book. Hmm... I'll let you know later if it worked!)

I'm really hoping that a few more (okay, a ton more) viewings will improve my opinion. I am already liking Toby's portrayal as well as Ruth - she doesn't seem as much the shrinking violet as Zelah Clarke. She seems quite bold, and I like it!

The changes bother me less and less with repetition. I think it really was a gut reaction to a similarity to the blunt language in the ITV version. However, I have faith that this version will have better taste. And so far we haven't seen Rochester bellow or growl so that's always a good sign (the ITV version lost me for good at Hay Lane with Rochester's 'DYAaAAAAAAMn YaWO!!!' at Jane). He is rather more grumpy than in the novel but I find it a great relief that all of this is coming from inside. I am impressed with all of the acting I have seen so far (Adele looks very promising too!)

See it a few times. I have seen it three or four times now and I am getting over the feeling that the dialogue was slipping into that territory. I will be very surprised if it goes from blunt to inane. The huge difference is that the new dialogue doesn't insult my intelligence, (for the 1997 film, I once took some dialogue and inserted 'Frootloops' and 'breakfast' for 'Jane' and 'love'. It worked out the same- "You don't know what breakfast is!" Until you've found your Frootloops).

Brontëana - Sandy Welch, from the one thing she's adapted that I've seen, is very good. She adapted North & South, which is a fantastic miniseries. I recommend it to all! Not a bit like the '95 P&P, but I like quite as much. It's actually a bit brooding, dark - and no, it's not American Civil War. ;) I haven't read the N&S book yet, but I've been told the adapting was done well. The dialogue in the movie is quite good.

Note for those who may already know but I'm mentioning it anyway (wink) - if you right-click the "Launch this in a stand-alone player" and click "Save Target/Link As..." you can save the clip to your computer in RealPlayer format. Handy for re-viewings.

I *love* it! Ruth's my bestJane so far! :D
Yes, the dialogue is quite N&S-like, with its simplicity and..trite elegance.

I have no luck. I thought moving to a provincial capital, I would have a better chance of buying BBC dramas but no one did I see. And so, I STILL have not seen the series. I was very close to ordering it from Amazon last night except that we are having some serious post issues at my residence. My tuition statement had been casually handed over to another resident to give to me!

I did not know I could save the clips! Thank you. This makes my job much easier. Often I can't get a wireless signal when I want to show someone what the show is like (the wallpaper is working nicely- yesterday a prof was speaking to me, cut off what she was saying to lean down and stare at it: "Jane Eyre?!... Wow." I've been playing the Hay Lane clip for them.

I feel a bit technologically impaired asking this, but where's the "Launch this in a stand-alone player" link/button? ^^;

Brontëana said...

When you play the preview clip a new window opens. Above the clip itself there's a grey bar with 'Launch this in a stand alne player.' Right click the bar and choose 'save target as...'

This morning I did some digging in the archives and I realised that by the time this is shown in north America I will have been following it for more than a year! (The first post I have about the production is from mid December! I've lasted so far, I should be able to hold out for another 4 months.

Lady Éowyn said...

Ah, never mind about saving the clip - at least for me. I've watched it several times, but I'm realizing that RealPlayer is connecting to the internet still to play it, because it buffers every time. I can't find any way to get around this so I can actually save it; because though I have reliable internet, it's satellite, and I'm restricted on bandwidth. Does it still buffer and stream for you, brontëana?

A year isn't too long! ;) I had to wait for one of my favorite movies for 5 1/2 years (Narnia - probably less favored then it would have been, had I not watched and waited so closely!). Only about 1 1/2 of those years was there any news to follow, however.

I'm beginning to see the good side to this coming in January, though I'm still impatient for it - January is sometimes a downer month, being right after Christmas; something to look forward to! :D

to Vaire:

I really ought not to complain, when most of the fans of the 1973 Jane Eyre had to wait 33 years to get a copy of their own! Pity I can't save the clip. But the Hay Lane scene seems to be doing the trick with most people I show it to.

mysticgypsy said...

Not at all. Her dress is dark enough..a shade of grey. Ruth's performance was quite absorbing that the color of her dress quite escaped me. And besides, it's not scarlet ;)

Brontëana said...

to mysticgypsy:

But you know that she has only two frocks- black and light grey- and that she only wears the grey on very important occasions! ;) But I suppose it not being scarlet makes up for this.

I'm just catching up on all the posts but I just had to comment...I have not seen the ITV version so I'm not familiar with the scenes described altho it doesn't sound like I'm missing much...

Bronteana, I love your breakfast/Froot Loops test for the 1997 version...hysterical!

I really like this. Especially the lighting. I always find watching the 1983 one irritating for its electrically lit set.

Seven days and 15 minutes to go!

Doesn't she have three dresses? Because she has a black stuff dress in silk too I think...
