Website for Jane Eyre 2006

The BBC's website for Jane Eyre is finally up and running! http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/janeeyre/
There's a photo gallery, wall paper downloads, episode synopsis, producer's diary, and behind the scenes pictures! Enjoy! And thanks to Bronteana reader Caitlen for the tip!

ETA: Tonight, on _____Shire News, Mr Rochester has accident in Hay Lane! We go there live to the press conference!

"Yeah, she was just standing there by the stile. No, I didn't pay any attention to her at first. One question at a time, please!"

OMG!!! *Squeeeeeeeee* Even more pictures and I can have AWESOME wallpapers for my computer!!! Lovely site and I am going quite delirious.
They should have a quiz too, like they did for N&S!!

(I noticed that Young Jane has curls!!! ;)

I think it was marshalsea who told me that they have a computer game on one of the BBC sites for a Dickens adaptation, and that they should do one for Jane Eyre. I played the game- it was surprisingly fun. I passed up looting corpses on the Thames but still caught small pox from a street sweeper I had stopped to talk to. Still, could have been worse!

Slow down, there! I don't want you to hurt yourself! I want to hear what you think of it :) There is a lot of interesting material there- and the producer's diary is fabulous. It's better than all of the books I had to edit last year.

Aces, thanks! On a cursory read of the producer’s notes, new things I’ve gleaned:

(SPOILERS for those who want to remain free of them!)

- Helen Burns has copper-red hair! Heavens!
- The end scene is touching and interesting and unusual and has good acting from Toby
- There will be some West Indian flashback scenes
- The Flight of the Bertha will be there in all its glory
- There are quite a few scenes of Jane saying little and feeling a great deal

I liked how the producer was miffed about how everyone commented on Toby’s red hair and that Ruth was 48 years old!

He hit on so many of the little quirks that have amused me while I've been following the production. From the 'my God, Jane's so OLD!' to 'Her eyebrows scare me!' He did miss 'but Jane is making a souffle!' which just confuses me.

I hope the lurkers are not going back into hiding now that they know that HE is watching.

I wish they had gone with te 1970s costuming sequence, though. :(

There are a couple of other surprising things, if you read the entire diary. I'm simply delighted. It is tormenting to have to wait until January, but then it will be sweeter, I think. That's what I keep telling myself. (I found out that we do have PBS in Halifax! Huzzah!)

Wow I'm excited!! Every nugget of info is such a treat! Looking through the photo diary I notice Jane sitting in (?) a tree while she reads the 'letter of hope' and wow, Mary Rivers is much taller than Diana. More so than I had pictured it. The 28th picture link was broken...did anyone else experience that? I just changed the 8 to a 9 in the URL to get back on track.

Bronteana, when did you comment on the eyebrows? (Being a late comer to your blog, I'm still catching up.) I felt the same way when I first saw a picture of Ruth. I keep thinking that they must be part of her fairy qualities.

Thank you, thank you!

I got up this morning and checked the message board, and found out about the website. I thought I would fall out of my chair with excitement! I wrote to them and asked if they would put up clips...here's hoping! I read the diary and found it very funny that the producer has been following the internet message boards and such. I started to laugh when I heard the snipe about Jane's lips being too red, and Jane being too old, and other such. At least we know they have been paying attention to us! On another VERY important note, I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the pic of Jane helping Rochester to his horse. He does have a sprain, after all - he won't just call Jane and a witch and then hop on his horse and gallop away. Thank heaven for small favors.

I didn't comment on eyebrows or such, but I commented on the feedback which cropped up over the internet as the first images appeared. There were a lot of silly comments on imdb for one where people were 'scared' by Ruth's eyebrows (quite a lot of people, actually!). Some of these comments he mentions might also be from comments on this blog. The producer reads them from time to time.

I didn't notice the broken link. I think that they are editing the page at the moment. This morning there were several pages of additional content but they have been blocked now. Those pages will be available after the 24th. I hope that they will keep adding things to the site. It is already a fantastic resource and a lot of fun!

Part of the reason why I posted a link here as well was so that he might be able to hear some feedback. I laughed too. It was great.

Maybe later we'll hear about how everyone is still complaining that Toby isn't Richard Armitage! LOL

I am so excited about this. It is almost like waiting for Christmas when I was a child.

There are so many interesting things on the site and I now have Rochester and Jane as my wallpaper. I loved the scenery in the one where he wears the hat but I finally chose the one with Jane and he without the hat. I think I will switch them back and forth. At any rate thanks to all concerned for all the information. Agnes

Someone on imdb was disturbed that they had heard Jane is shown how to make a souffle in the show.

I cannot confirm that Miss Eyre will be making a souffle ;)

to Agnes:
It is. For me it will be like waiting for my birthday (which is in January). I'm sure it will be well worth the wait!

I stole all of them. And will be switching them from time to time. I had wallpaper from the BBC's 1973 version before my computer crashed and I had not replaced it yet. I have the one of both of them with the hat up at the moment (they look a little cubby because I have a widescreen but that's okay!) Now I can just flash my laptop around to help get the word out (I'm still meeting a lot of people who haven't heard of the program).

Perhaps we should ask what *type* of souffle it is...ha ha! It never occurred to me that Jane looks too old. Initially, my minor - very minor - squabble was that her eyebrow shape made her appear a little too severe or hard - more so than i would expect. I guess everyone has their own nitpicks. I just can't wait to see more -- yes, clips would be a nice addition!

to chrisv:

Oh, it wasn't about Ruth actually looking too old! For a long while imdb had the wrong Ruth Wilson linked on the page set up for Jane Eyre. I wrote to them and they changed it eventually...

Then the BBC linked to the wrong Ruth Wilson (she's about 20 years older than Ruth, and would actually be a bit older than Rochester!).

The eyebrow thing was funny to me because for my favourite adaptation that is all I hear about- how people don't like the actress' "1970's eyebrows." It is really funny because those are her natural eyebrows but everyone thinks they've been plucked or drawn in or something. Nevermind how she can act...

Anonymous said...

OK, a mixup in actresses make more sense than thinking Ruth looked too old.

Yes, Ruth's acting is ultimately the thing I'm concerned about so the eyebrow observation was a minor quibble for me....but I never heard of "1970s eyebrows"...whatever that style would be....

I just read through the production diary-- he teared up at the proposal scene...yeah!

Literally less than a minute ago I read your comment, checked the site and there were the links again! In the time it took me to open another browser to update the post here, the links were down again! I think I'll give it some time to settle down!

I really like eyes, including those eyebrows the best of all I've seen.

I meant Ruth's, of course.

oh dear, I'll never get any work done now that the site is up, the temptation will just be too much.

I'm not keen on frowning Rochester on the JE homepage though.

Brontëana said...

I'm sorry, Penny. Now that it's here, it can't be helped ;)

pennyforyourdreams said...

Argh, I've only just got my computer working after the router died on me, I think the excitement and the pretty killed it. I'm on super slow dial up right now!

Anonymous said...

Wow, I just had a peeing-my-pants-with-excitement moment - no, make that hour - there. Now I'm finally breathing normally again.

Crikey, though! These types of things aren't good for a girl's health. Can't wait to get home so I can deck out my computer with JE regalia!

It's a good way to go ;) Re: the frowning Rochester, I admit that is my favourite picture of Toby so far. Maybe a larger version will show up later (more pictures are said to be forthcoming as the series is aired).

We are incredibly pampered, aren't we? We get a whole website will all of this loveliness! For me, being in Canada, it almost makes up for having to wait until January to see it.

I've asked the producer about video clips. I hope he will be able to let me know if and when we can expect some. I know they have posted clips on many of their Drama sites.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoing the site!

So this version will be 'your' version? I feel like this one is going to be special to me, simply because of all of the people I've met while following it for all of these months. Ruth Wilson is also very near to my age- within 5 days I believe- so it will certainly be interesting to watch someone my age on screen in an adaptation of my favourite novel.

I know, I skipped breakfast to read the producer's diary when it was still available. That can't be too healthy. They really should be ashamed. ;)

Brontëana said...

Same here. I read the novel after seeing the 1996 film, and then I had no idea the 1997 film had been made until last year. Adaptations of JE come along once a decade (usually) so I was expecting this one but I was still surprised that I was right! It is a lot of fun.

I like all of them in some strange way- even the 1997 film (which I dislike in many respects). I have my favourite purist version, my favourite silly version, artistic version etc. I'm sure this new one will find its place in my heart too. So far its the most daring- by far.

Look at the cast bios - Aidan McArdle is the "visionary" John Eshton? There it is again. I read that in an article posted here some months ago, and thought it was just the author mixing up Eshton and St. John.

Andrew Buchan as St. John isn't listed on the BBC site, either. I'm not doubting he'll be there ("Ah, now I shall begin to put some faith in you [the production]!" I say as said Jane to the "gypsy!").

Is it possible McArdle is listed and Buchan isn't because McArdle has been in more films?

But the "visionary" term is confusing.

And if any think I'm focusing on minutiae, what else shall I do for the next 3 1/2 months?
