When will the hurting stop?...

This morning I went shopping with a friend of mine. Strolling down an aisle, I noticed the North American release for Jane Eyre 2006. After showing it to my friend, I returned it to its place, then gaped in horror, and snatched it up again...

Absent from this image is an endorsement, and the cause of all my distress.

"...style and substance with just the right amount of heaving bodices.
-The Guardian"

What soul agony was this? And yet, I can't deny that it is a somewhat accurate depiction for this sexed up version. And yet, my response was still, as I said to my friend: "The right amount of heaving bodices, being... none?"

And to add to the disgrace: the American version has no deleted scenes.

I wasn't aware that this was new information to you, or I would have let you know.

Yes, I know. I haven't seen the commentaries, but the deleted scenes aren't very impressive, so I am not all that disappointed.

I have missed a few things while I was buried in the library the last few months. ;)

What? I bought "the american version" from PBS - it has the "heaving bodices" endorsement - which I didn't like anyway - - - but it sure doesn't have the deleted scenes - the program is just like what was on TV.... does this mean I have to buy another version to get them? And are they "in" the production, or just tacked on at the end?

appreciate any info,

The deleted scenes can be seen on youtube. I have a post linking back to them. It looks like they are not inserted into the film as they were with the 1982 version. The scenes are very short, and I can't think of any I really have a desire to see again.

Off the top of my head, Miss Temple gives a ludicrous speech about how the children are happy, although they don't wonder why there is more food for everyone. Rochester chases Jane into her room, she closed it on him while he puts his arms around the door, trying to force it open until she is able to push him into the hallway. In another there's the 'without it my heart is broken' scene. It's a continuation of the bedroom scene. There's also a part when Lady Ingram is talking about the wild boy, and Jane visualises him in a cage. All of these scenes are very short.

There's that one where Jane is standing outside with Mrs. Fairfax and Adele (after the house party leaves). You hear Rochester call for Jane and she merrily skips off to him. That scene makes me giggle.

I ordered the North American version from PBS, and when I saw that quote, I was highly amused and thoroughly horrified at the same time. Granted, my fellow addicts and I love watching the hot-and-heavy scene in Episode 4, but that quote makes it sound like a costume porno...Jane Eyre is too classy for that! They're marketing to the wrong crowd with that quote.

And I agree - there really aren't any heaving bodices anyway!

So, even though I know the "deleted scenes" are not that great or lengthy - and I have already "scene" them all on You-Tube . . . in the american version - are they IN the production (where they would have normally gone?) or no?

does anyone know?

thanks dears,

From all reports, the answer is no. It looks like they are run together in one track, and are not even fullscreen. Pennyforyourthoughts describes them like this.

I must have completely forgotten about it. I cannot remember it in te slightest... I suppose, then, that it was not very important to the whole!

Tell that to all of the reporters writing on the novel! To them it is all about heaving, danger, and lots of bodices in all states of distress with Mr Rochester leering in the centre of it all.

The scene was very brief and really not that memorable. I'm glad that it was not included in the final production. His voice is offscreen and he says something along the lines of "Miss Eyre, I need you IMMEDIATELY" and she scurries off.

Oh, I remember it now! Meh.
