Jane Eyre with Ciaran Hinds and Sophie Thompson

I promised a few readers that I would post this 4 part radio adaptation when I had the chance, and so, here it is! It is my understanding that this adaptation led to the casting of Mr. Hinds in the 1997 film, because they found his voice 'passionate.' If you like the 1997 film, you will probably enjoy this, but if on the contrary you cannot stand it- this radio version will hardly be an improvement. Sorry. So, he's had two tries, and they're both pretty much as obnoxious and OTT. Sophie is a tad lispy and, the entire production is middling. Sorry. Better things to come, I promise.

On another note, I know there are a few Romanian readers out there... Does anyone want a Romanian audiobook of Jane Eyre?

Interestingly, in reverse order parts 4-1!

IIRC I don’t mind Ciaran so much in the radio version – partly because one of the things I objected to in the TV version was his nasty moustache (how shallow I am!). Sophie Thompson, however, who usually I love, made a very bad choice in giving Jane such a girly lisp, however.

Not having to see him act is a bonus indeed ;) I am quite disappointed with the quality of these recent BBC radio adaptations. They're laughable. I haven't listened to all of The Professor or Villette yet but Shirley was silly- especially the very stagey fake French accent they gave Robert Moore!

And I always thought 'Barraclough' would be pronounced 'Barraclaw' in the Irish style not 'Barracluff.'

Oops, there were a few too many howevers in my post!

I had a few problems with Emanuel’s accent in Villette as it happens. Mostly it is okay, and not too blatant, but it wavers. At one point he has to say to Lucy ‘tu as mon coeur’, already a shocking barbarism with the ‘tu’, but he pronounces ‘coeur’ as ‘cour’. Bahness!

I was so annoyed with Caroline Helstone in the audio version...and I don't recall feeling the same when I read the book.

Only one ;)

Guess what I'm going to listen to tonight while trying to screen out the techno music in my new residence *sigh*. Villette it is! I listened to the Jane Eyre opera last night and it worked nicely. I liked it- and the louder sections screened out all of the noise :)

It has been awhile since I listened to Shirley and I was so amused by Robert Moore's accent that I didn't pay much attention to Caroline. After I listen to Villette I'll have to give it a try.

eek, so off topic for this post: Toby Stephens was interviewed this morning on BBC Breakfast and I found a clip to download here. A little sneak preview for you.

Very off topic! I'm glad to see just how off topic. He certainly doesn't over-play the scene like Mr.Hinds. I'm encouraged. The interview is much better as well. I knew he'd have a good understanding of the character! I hope some more clips will leak out to keep me going until the DVD (my new university is out of range of PBS :(

Dear Brontëana, I just found your blog today through an LJ link. I'm very happy to have discovered it!
Not small was my surprise to read your offer for a Romanian audiobook of Jane Eyre! I would be very interested in it!! I didn't even know such a thing existed :)
Jane Eyre was the first "book for grown-ups" to make a deep impression on me, when I read it at age 10 or 11 :) Since then, the Brontës have had a special place in my heart.

So, thank you very much for keeping this blog, which I know I'll be visiting :) and for your generous offer!

I didn't know it existed either until a friend sent it to me along with many many many other adaptations! I will post it soon for you and anyone else who wants it but perhaps were too shy to comment :)

Dear Bronteana, I am perfectly and unfortunately aware of coming too late to this blog: I literally dived for the 1996 Radio adaptation of Jane Eyre with Ciarán Hinds you kindly posted here - WHOOPS! - 3 years ago:( Of course, the files are not available anymore... I beg you please if you come to read my plea, could you post them again?
Thank you in advance:) Jane

Thank You
