Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie to Star in Wuthering Heights

This was just brought to my attention by BronteBlog. Read all about it in today's issue of Leeds Today. I cannot say that the pairing has ever ocurred to me, but it has potential.

Hollywood megastars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are to star in a Yorkshire blockbuster of Wuthering Heights.

The Emily Bronte 1847 classic, set on the isolated Top Withens area of the Yorkshire Moors above Haworth, is the inspiration behind a new, lavish depiction of the gripping Victorian tale.Film chiefs have told the Yorkshire Evening Post 'off the record' that the deal has been done to bring two of the film industry's biggest stars to Yorkshire. Film scouts are understood to have been combing the Yorkshire area in the last 10 days to find the perfect film locations to film the wild, passionate scenes between two of the world's hottest stars, who will play Heathcliff and Cathy, two of the literary world's greatest romantic figures.

They are rumoured to start filming next year and could be in Yorkshire for six months, along with a huge crew and cast. The lid is being kept on details of the deal. Depp, 42, who is a lover of the Bronte's literary works, once said during an interview: "Am I a romantic? I've seen Wuthering Heights 10 times. I'm a romantic."

I am really disappointed...I must confess that I am not fond of the idea of these particular actors performing those roles. I find it more shocking to imagine Depp as Heathcliff than Jolie as Cathy (just my opinion...no offense intended Depp or Jolie fans). I thought Depp did a nice job in Finding Neverland and I am sure he's a good actor by all means...but I somehow just can't reconcile him and my image of Heathcliff..

I have spread the news through other channels and the word seems to be a a universal: "WHAT?!" And a lot of confusion- and dismay.

I think Depp stands a good chance of pulling it off- he has a way of finding the essence of a character. It would be interesting just to see WHAT he thought this would be in the case of H! I agree that he doesn't look like H in my mind either- except for the darkness. As for Jolie, I cannot imagine her living on the moors, or a farm for that matter. She is a very sophisticated, exotic, and modern-looking beauty. When they put her in ancient Greece for Alexander she looked like a modern run-way model, not Queen of Macedonia. Very hard to get my mind around these images.

I think one thing is certain in my mind- it will be a beautiful production unless they go overboard with the hyper-realism (or heaving bosoms- I think we all can do without that).

Depp dark???? hahaha I always thought he was far from it!
oh Bronteana hehe that comment about the heaving bosoms just made me smile:) I was indeed heartbroken on hearing this news.
I am not sure how Angelina Jolie can pull of Cathy. Literally. I doubt her ability to perform such a difficult role and moreover, like you said, her appearance would not suit. As for Depp, he is not rugged enough to make a Heathcliff, even if he is versatile as an actor.

I feel like Emily's masterpiece, which I hold so close to my heart, has been (literally) brutally molested :(

You have my condolences, then. I guess it was our turn after the new Pride and Prejudice- wherein we saw another large lipped actress take on the role of a classic English beauty. ;)

I agree about Depp not looking like a farm labourer in Yorkshire but for me there is at least the potential of seeing what he does with the character. I don't know enough about Jolie's abilities to comment on how she might do with Cathy.

I also have a hunch that this WH will be heavy on the Gothicism- as will, possibly, the new Jane Eyre.

to sum it up in one word:
horrific!

I´ve never particularly liked
the book out of digust for the
selfishness of the main
characters... but the thought
of Jolie playing Catherine
makes my stomach cramp...
why didn´t they choose
someone like Madleine Stowe
(from "The Last of The
Mohicans") or Mary Louise
Parker (from "Fried Green
Tomatoes") - they have the
right look, and the *ability* to
play such a difficult role... even
Liv Tyler would do a good job,
I think... but these days,
producing a film has nothing to
do with getting a message
across, it´s all about earning
lots of cash, and Jolie is the
perfect dray-horse. The only
thing one can do is: not
watching! :-)

I have some doubts about this project ever getting off the ground. It sounds more and more improbable the more I think of it. Johnny Depp has a distaste for 'romantic roles' and dislikes remakes. Why then would he agree to remake one of his favourite films? The pairing also seems so very strange, it does ring more like a rumor than truth. Maybe there's hope then? ;)

Yeah I do hope you are right Bronteana! It does feel like a rumor..
